INTRODUCTIONTechnology and therapeutic education can together significantly improve metabolic control.We aimed to access the lipid profile of paediatric type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients under functional insulin therapy in the first years of disease.METHODSWe conducted a retrospective study based on hospital records that included all T1D patients under functional insulin therapy since the diagnosis, with follow-up in the first five years of T1D in a tertiary care Paediatric Hospital.RESULTSWere included 98 T1D patients, 56.1% were female. At diagnosis: mean age was 8.2u00b13.6 years and mean BMI z-score was 0.29u00b11.08. At first year, 30.6% had dyslipidaemia.During follow-up, all patients began to use bolus calculator, 27.6% began treatment with insulin pump [2.05 (1.6,3.0) years after diagnosis] and 26.5% used CGM for several days to evaluate glycaemic profile. There were 46 hospitalizations for therapeutic education for 29 patients.At 5thyear, median A1c was 7.52% (7,8) and 27.8% had dyslipidaemia. Regression and progression of dyslipidaemia in 5 years occurred in 43.3% and 13,4% of patients, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in A1c, glycemia, BP and BMI between dyslipidaemic and normolipidaemic groups.DISCUSSION Unlike many studies, there is no correlation between lipid profile and glycaemic control. Dyslipidaemia regression occurred in more than one third of patients without anti-dyslipidaemic agent.CONCLUSIONThese findings suggest that early functional insulin therapy and use of bolus calculator may be responsible for good glycaemic control in the first years of T1D and lower rate of dyslipidaemia, comparing to literature (27.8% vs 29 - 66%).
