Taking Care of Your Body
While every person who suffers from diabetes will have a different experience, there are a few things all diabetics have in common. First, it's to do with insulin and how that helps you obtain energy from your food. Second, blood sugar will need to be controlled either with diet, medications, or both. Lastly, lifestyle changes will need to be made.
Here is how insulin works for our bodies and how diabetes affects it:
Diabetes occurs when you have high blood sugar that doesn't drop naturally after eating a meal. The blood sugar is actually glucose that comes from foods that we eat, and our liver can make some when we maybe skip a meal. Glucose or blood sugar is our body's main source of energy.
Insulin is made by the pancreas, located just under the stomach. After you eat, the pancreas releases insulin into your bloodstream. As your blood sugar rises, the insulin helps get glucose through the cell walls so it can be used for energy. If there isn't enough insulin, the glucose/blood sugar stays in the blood and cannot do its job. Sometimes the pancreas makes some insulin and the cells are resistant to it. This is called, insulin resistance. In some people, the pancreas stops making insulin completely.
There's one small role of the liver we need to discuss here before we move on. It may be a small role, but it can lead to big diabetic complications if you're not careful. The liver helps our bodies get temporary energy when our energy reserves are low. If you skip a meal and drop your blood sugar, the liver sends out stored glycogen that acts like glucose in the body. This is a temporary fix until real food comes on board. The problem is, there's only so much glycogen stored for this and if glycogen runs out the liver will take fat and turn it into, Ketones. If there's not enough insulin being produced to manage blood sugar for energy, the liver will begin to produce ketones that are also a temporary source of energy. Ketones over the long-haul are not a good source of energy at all.
As a diabetic, you may notice you have high blood sugars fasting prior to breakfast and think to yourself, "I haven't eaten and I've been asleep. How is my sugar high?" Good question! This is your liver taking care of your body through the night. It first released your stored glycogen and then began making ketones to get you through.
